adele doesn't have to be taxing

So, Adele has some dodgy views on tax.

I clicked on the link to the Guardian article critiquing her recent Q interview and like many, was slightly aghast at her opinion that she shouldn't have to pay so much tax on her millions for various reasons, the most telling being that she "can't even use public transport any more". Tweets and blogs followed condemning her, calling her stupid and a twat. It seemed to have the same level of response as a Nadine Dorries anti-choice call.

The points made on the Guardian were very valid, as were those on others' blogs. However, they seemed to be made in the spirit of "how could she not know this?". And the fact is, she has worked in the music business for all her adult life: she may have her keeping-it-real image but she is a girl from a stage school who has used her unconventional voice and overconventional looks as her brand.

Screaming and screeching is just going to fade into the constant background noise brought by her fame, the meaningless insults and misogyny. Someone must know someone who can sit her down with a cup of tea and explain why she might want to rethink her ideas about this one issue.

Or maybe I'm a simplistic romantic who thinks everything can be resolved with a kind explanation and a cup of tea. It's possible.

my comment on BBC News website

Never been on a march before simply because I never understood what they would achieve, other than an opportunity for the right-wing press to beat the left wing with the stick of minority violence.

Today I woke up and thought, I want to stand up and be counted. I don't work in the public sector; I have white, cis, non-disabled, straight and other privileges. I even had a private education. But I firmly believe that investment in public services is the only way to ensure the survival and growth of our society.

I am happy to pay my taxes and cannot understand individuals who do not want to invest in their own country. I was appalled at the man from the so-called 'taxpayers alliance' speaking on the BBC earlier.

Those individuals and companies who dodge tax are the ones who must pay for the recovery of the country. Not those who support and provide services for them.

Today I am proud to have swelled the numbers of the march with my solitary 1. I am still sure that the small pockets of trouble will be used against the peaceful marchers and the government will explain everything away and carry on regardless. But if they ask me, I can say, I was there too.
